 Configure SubDomain
 How-to
 Login to CPanel

First make sure javascript and cookies are enabled. Option Internet Explorer. From the main menu click Tools->Internet Options. Choose the Security tab click the Default Level button and then drag the slider to the bottom. This will turn off the security. If you are using Internet Explorer 6 then choose the privacy tab and slide the allow cookies bar to the bottom and click OK. Type in to the browser: [yourdomainname]/cpanel (e.g. www.webhostinginjapan.com/cpanel). You'll be prompted for login and password after which you'll be logged into the cpanel. CPanel is the "control panel" to administer your web site.

From the Main Screen of the CPanel, top left corner, is the CPanel Manage section. One of the links is Manage SubDomain.

We are used to seeing the sub domains "www" and "ftp". Or when configuring an email client, subdomains like "mail", "pop3", "smtp" are common. However those subdomains are reserved and shouldn't be used.

So why subdomains? Most commonly companies distinctive services or brands are broken into seperate subdomains. Yahoo.com has tons of distinctive services "games, "movies", "auctions", "Classifieds".

Some service oriented companies break their web site into a seperate sections for "support". However i'd recommend if you want to promote several services on one web site then break them into seperate subdomains.

Fig 2. Sub Domain Maintenance Screen

The Sub Domain Maintenance Screen of www.webhostinginjapan.com is shown in Fig 2. Add sub domains by typing in the sub domain and clicking "Add". As explained on the Sub Domain Maintenance Screen if you make a sub domain like "support" (e.g. support.webhostinginjapan.com) then the base directory would be [yourdomainname]/support/.

After creating the sub-domain make an FTP account with the same name as the sub-domain (e.g. sub-domain support then make FTP account support). The ftp account is not automatically created for you. Once the ftp for the sub-domain is created you'll want to login. Please note the FTP username for sub-domain "support" is "support@[yourdomainname]" not just "support".
